PowerDNS Whitepapers

DNS is one of the vital components of the internet, invisibly making the internet work for everyone for almost four decades. PowerDNS has been a huge part of making that happen for the past 20 years and we are extremely active in addressing the demanding requirements on DNS software. Our whitepapers reflect this, for example, in the areas of DNS for 5G, cloud-native DNS and DNS encryption.

DNS in a 5G Network

The role of DNS in fulfilling the vision of 5G has not been fully explored. This whitepaper examines the key components of the 5G vision and shows how legacy DNS architectures are not sufficient to meet the 5G requirements in areas such as latency, security, edge computing, and IOT. It also highlights how 5G requirements, such as orchestration and network slicing, create new requirements for DNS software and architecture.

Cloud-native PowerDNS

DNS has often been assumed to be a technology that, although critical infrastructure, is not affected by shifts in technology or business practices, and as software that doesn’t evolve much in terms of features. All of those assumptions are now proving to be false, as the world of DNS has been changing hugely over the past few years, also caused by the advance of cloud-native deployments.

DNS Encryption

Until recently, DNS remained one of the few non-encrypted internet protocols. To address this two IETF standards have been introduced, which are DNS over TLS (DoT) and DNS over HTTPS (DoH). This whitepaper discusses the benefits of encrypted DNS, why DNS encryption also fuels a trend towards ‘Over-the-Top’ (OTT) DNS and how network operators can address this.

Network-based security with DNS

The growth in overall internet traffic and increasing number of connected devices are expected to continue to grow rapidly over the coming years. This, coupled with an increased dependency on online tools, conferencing services, and the use of IoT devices, also makes those devices more attractive for malicious activities. This whitepaper discusses why and how network-based security is the best way to meet security requirements today and in the future.

PowerDNS
for ENUM

E.164 Number Mapping (ENUM) was introduced to form a bridge between the separated worlds of “legacy” phone networks and (modern) internet multimedia applications, in order to allow voice services from both worlds to interconnect. DNS acts as the phonebook of the internet, and this paper elaborates on how ENUM is a way to use DNS as a centralized phonebook to connect applications based on old-fashioned “phone numbers” with multimedia applications on the internet.
