I just read
rumors on All Things Digital that Yahoo is trying to unload Zimbra, which it acquired 2 years ago for a whopping $350m. Why does it? Because sometimes more than just a pretty face is required.
"..Yahoo bought the company to goose that business, whose main rival has been Google (GOOG)–along with using Zimbra technology to improve its massive consumer email offering, also under siege from Google. That integration has gone slowly and Yahoo now has less interest in selling email products to others..."
Oh, so the integration did not go well, eh? That may be the same reason why the launch of the Zimbra based Web Mailer at Comcast took so long - and why it then looked completely different from the Zimbra product.
A single code stream (easy to update), a modular system (easy to integrate and update) and the ability to use the existing mail systems from providers makes integration easy and migration something that is not required. This is why our partners can update their 10m+ users every quarter to the latest and greatest version of the product.
The SaaS world spins much much faster than the traditional on-premises application world. SaaS apps must be built for this velocity. If you fail you fall behind, like Yahoo did on mail.
