An innovative technological solution designed and implemented by Consultoria Net, Peru used open source software developed by Open-Xchange, to give employees at the Ministerio de Trabajo and the Government Institution of Community Defense easier access to e-mail, files and Web services.

Employment and Promotion Ministry
The Employment and Promotion Ministry - officially named El Ministerio de Trabajo y Promoción del Empleo (MINTRA) – is the 1,200 employee administrative arm of the employment system of the Peruvian government. It's mission is to guide and lead the implementation of programs designed to improve the country's employment environment, contribute to micro and small business development, promote social foresight, and assure adherence to laws related to labor matters. All these, take place in a dialogue and agreement context between the social actors and the government.

The new collaborative software system gives the organization a centralized security architecture based on Open LDAP. Employees can now access e-mail, files and Web applications with a single username and password. The Open-Xchange collaboration software also provides employees with new tools, including shared calendars, task delegation, discussion forums, file administration and project control. Consultoria Net, Peru also implemented a unique digital identity system.

Government Institution of Community Defense
Consultoria Net, Peru recently migrated the Government Institution of Community Defense – Defonsoria del Pueblo’s aging, proprietary e-mail system to a more flexible and cost-effective open source system. The migration to Open-Xchange’s award-winning software elminiated nearly $115,000 of e-mail licensing costs for the organization. Built on a mix of open source technologies, including Open LDAP and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Open Xchange Server version 5.0 is able to support thousands of users with less technical and administrative resources than proprietary e-mail systems. The software gives employees collaboration tools to administer e-mails and manage calendars, with included connectors for integration with Microsoft Outlook.
